Position available: Director Designate - Physical Planning Unit
The Director: Physical Planning Unit is a senior position reporting to the Executive Director: Properties & Services. The present incumbent will retire at the end of 2011 and a Director Designate is required to work with and then succeed the Director. The Director is responsible for campus planning and space management. This includes identifying, planning, and presenting the University's future infrastructure requirements within affordability limits and for space management.

Qualifications and Experience Required: Requirements include: • A minimum of 10 years experience as a professional architect and planner; • Extensive knowledge of the discipline; • A track record of successful leadership and negotiation with a broad range of stakeholders with diverse views; and • Registration or eligibility for registration as an Architect, Planner or Urban Designer with the appropriate professional bodies or institutes. • The ability to use tools such as AutoCAD, Archibus and Syllabus Plus. The ideal candidate will have experience in university planning and/or university campus design. Responsibilities include: • All aspects relating to University campus physical planning and in this regard working with and managing consultants for specialist studies – traffic engineers, heritage practitioners, environmental practitioners, urban designers, town planners and landscape architects • Developing the university’s spatial development plans and precinct plans. • Developing precinct and concept briefs for individual buildings; • Identifying future space needs; • Preparing briefs for building projects and monitoring the work of design professionals in the procurement of new buildings and major renewal projects; • Developing schedules of accommodation for new buildings and major renewal projects in consultation with User Groups; • Maintaining an accurate and current record of all UCT space in drawing and database form; • Compiling and submitting management and prescribed reports on space and space usage for internal and external ( Department of Higher Education and Training [DoHET];) purposes • Space management, including at a micro level, timetabling and the allocation of classrooms, together with University committees responsible for space.
Salary Range: The annual remuneration package is negotiable
